Matt attended the Governor’s Institute in 2007 looking to expand the personal finance curriculum at Cocalico High School. By the end of the week, he was inspired to transform it instead. He started with a call to a local credit union that resulted in a grant to purchase new educational software. Matt went on to enlist additional support from the business community, including financial literature, multi-media resources and expert speakers. He also created a personal finance webpage for students and parents and developed a new course for students on international finance. Finally, Matt wasn’t content to simply transform what happens in his own classroom; he developed and presented training to other teachers in the district about how to
incorporate personal finance concepts into their instructional content as well.

“Mr. Bergman went above and beyond his teaching responsibilitiesto find a better method of teaching personal finance, develop training strategies to enhance the curriculum, secure funding to obtain necessarymaterials, and promote the program through public relations with local media.”
