2009 Graduate of the Governor’s Institute on Financial Education
Wayne Griffiths, Teacher Mentor
Abington Heights School District

Inspired by her attendance at last year’s Governor’s Institute, Sharon developed a new course for the first time. In the spring of 2009, Sharon was planning an academy” for her Business and Computer Department colleagues in an effort to update and align course offerings within the department’s curriculum. After inviting an Office of Financial Education representative to address the group, she encouraged everyone in her department to attend the Governor’s Institute. She worked with her principal to implement a personal finance course as a graduation requirement. She and her department colleagues presented their case to several school committees and the school board, which approved the new curriculum and graduation requirement.  Beginning this fall, all students at Burrell High School will have had to take a one semester class in personal finance to graduate.
